How to: Book Selection

April 9, 2013 Tips 0

I know that in one way or another, you were in a situation where book selection was difficult. There will always be that time when you go to a bookstore and just gaze at the selection displayed there clueless about the released titles. OC or practical people like me as I like to put it do have choices and I’m not the type to just buy and buy books without ever knowing if it’s worth my time and money.   When I do go book shopping, I always make it sure that I:

  • Prioritize the genre that I’m interested in.
  • Prioritize buying the sequel books of a series that I love. Yep, if I am short on budget which is a factor for difficulty in book selection, I always prioritize buying the sequels first for books that have series. At least with this strategy, one can never  go wrong or at least, you already have an idea on what the book is going to be.  Just be sure that you love the series when you’re buying the sequel.  I have a book here in my drawer which I hate and so I did not buy the 3 sequels that followed.
  • Look at my budget. If I can’t afford the book that I really like, I have to either save it or wait for a sale or look for a second hand copy or wait for the paperback release.
  • In case of new releases with new authors that I’m not familiar with but the book front covers were intriguing, I do make a mental note of them and when I’m at home or at the office,  I will immediately log in into my Goodreads account and read 5-10 reviews of that particular book while being careful not to read too much spoiler. If the reviews are great then that would be the time that I’ll buy.

For me, there’s no such thing as “crap” book. We cannot please everyone.  Our takes and feelings about the books that we’ve read are very subjective and for me, cannot be really made as a solid ground for arguments unless the book is already attacking the main aspects of humanity and the likes.

I hope that with this post, you will be able to ease yourself in selecting your must read books. If you have other tips with book selection, please share it here. 😀 Thanks for reading.
